About Nona
I wanted to feel good, walk in a good way, and stay active. "Obstacles are the things in our way that give us the courage and desire to take new directions." I began using a cane over 25 years ago because of a neuromuscular disease called, Charcot Marie Tooth Disease or CMT for short. CMT news website (http://www.hnf-cure.org) or (http://charcot-marie-tooth.org). I had very little balance and struggled to walk any distance. Outdoor activities became difficult and my energy level was low. So often our bodies tell us that we need a little help but we tend to ignore the signs. I did not want to use a walking cane but I knew I had to if I was going to stay active and healthy. As I searched and searched for a cane, I realize it was going to be difficult finding one that fit me and my personality. Then one night I had a dream that I was walking with a beautiful blue beaded cane. That was when I began the journey of Nona's Canes. I began making walking canes for myself and others who needed a cane but perhaps couldn't find one that made them feel good. I wanted to make canes that were beautiful, fun and unique. I wanted my canes to invited interaction and conversation. And when approached, it is not mydisability that people notice first. I've met many wonderful people through my canes and have been inspired by them all. Another Obstacle - Another Remedy. The severity of my CMT, required me to wear leg braces known as AFOs or Ankle Foot Orthotics. The AFOs are made of lightweight plastic. They are custom molded to fit snugly under my feet, support my ankles, and extend up my legs to just under my knees. However to keep the brace from rubbing against the skin, a barrier is required between the AFO and skin. It has been the practice that a knee sock be worn on the leg as a barrier. As my sister (who also wears AFOs) and I sat around my Mother's table, we talked of the difficulties with socks and AFOs. My legs ached constantly from the binding socks and it was hot in the summer. My sister's feet and legs would swell and she had deep grooves in her legs from sock bands. I realized that most of our problems would be solved if we didn't have to wear the socks all the time. It was my light-bulb moment. So I designed, filed patent, and met with a manufacturer to produce an AFO Liner. The AFO Liner is a sleeve that fits on the AFO itself. Knitted with special fiber blends, the liners wick moisture, cushion, and are hygienic. The AFO Liners come in white, black, and tan. With AFO Liners on braces, you don't have to wear socks at all. I can wear sandals in the summer, dress shoes with sheer hose, or sport anklets and tennis shoes. Now socks are and option, not a necessity. Though over 50, I am young at heart and want to continue my lifestyle and hobbies. I am a wife, mother, grandmother, wood carver, canemaker, and inventor. My favorite hobby is avocational archeology. I have been a member of the Oklahoma Anthropological Society( http://www.ou.edu/cas/archsur/oas/ ) for over 15 years and still love hiking on surveys and participating in archeological digs.I don't plan on sitting this life out, or growing roots that can't spread. I try to always be grateful for the things I can do. |

My Hiking Staffs. Over the years, I have had requests for hiking staffs. What I didn't realize was that many people with temporary or permanent disabilities would better be assisted by a staff rather than a cane. |

For me, hiking is easier and safer using two staffs for balance. It Works Great!
