These Unique Walking Canes and Hiking Staffs These unique walking canes and staffs are a series of beautifully carved, burned, beaded, and woven pieces by Oklahoma artist and cane maker Nona Leatherwood Maxwell. Carved spiral bases, inlaid stones, detailed etchings, burned etchings, on richly stained hardwood along with Peyote Stitch beadwork and woven cane fiber materials adorn these - One of a Kind - walking canes and staffs. The Peyote Stitch beadwork is a fine and elaborate style of beading where the beads are woven around and up the wood, one bead at a time. The beadwork is done by two of Oklahoma's most talented beading artists, Joe and Eva Big Medicine of Oklahoma's Cheyenne Indian Tribe. Note the fine detail of bead color in the stitching. Nylon thread helps ensure bead security and slots are caved out of the wood so the beads are inset. This not only enhance the unique design but helps protect the beads if the piece is dropped. Cherokee style basketry is the influence for the canes that include weaving. Beautiful patterns are woven along the shaft. Buckskin feels good to the hand. The handles and handle slots of the canes and staffs are wrapped in buckskin. Fringe, imitation feathers, brass beads, glass crow beads also accent the handles. The canes and staffs are made from 1" hardwood - mainly oak. Most may be shortened without jeopardizing their integrity or appearance. An authentic and beautiful work or art, these canes and staffs may be proudly added to any collection of Native American style works, or used every day as fully-functional assistive devices. |
